About this seminar

Liz Brown, MacMillan Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh and Transplant Coordinator, SE Scotland discusses the role of nurses in providing psychological and emotional support for myeloma patients.

Reflection point:

(1) What advice would you offer to your patient if they are having difficulty coping with the psychological impact of a diagnosis of myeloma? Consider the effect of mind-body interaction, sources of help from healthcare professionals, family and friends, and formal support from various patient organisations.

(2) Under what circumstances might you consider referring a patient to a psychologist? Consider some of the common indications patients may exhibit such as anxiety about their situation, distress over difficulty coping with physical symptoms and treatment and/or procedural anxieties e.g. fear of needles, hospitals etc.
